While the American and Allied forces move toward the perilous D-Day invasion of Normandy, Jerry and Marjie Macmillan are facing new challenges on the home front. With Marjie’s two brothers serving in the army, the foreboding Christmas Day news arrives on their doorstep.

Meanwhile the Macmillans endure a painful good-bye as their best friends leave to train as missionaries. But they also discover what it costs to support their friends’ controversial intention to serve in a country that is enemy territory.

They also find themselves caught in a whirlwind of other community concerns. Criticism of Marjie’s role in the church, the sudden loss of one of the most precious church members, and a tragedy at a neighbor’s farm are a cause for heartache and heart-searching decisions.
