Adelaide Pride is a Southern Belle left alone and penniless after the Civil War, her home burned to the ground by the Union soldiers as they left. Adelaide’s cousin has arranged for her to become a paid companion to Mrs. Amberley, an unrefined, disagreeable gossip who is jealous of Addie’s natural grace and beauty. Mrs. Amberley tries her best to keep Addie out of the social scene, but there is no discouraging the many gentleman callers who take an interest in the Southern beauty. But will Addie’s pride keep her from finding a true love to call her own?
